Project Location-Kenya
Project Name: She creates Change

The She Creates Change initiative by Room to Read and implemented by Polycom Girls in Homabay and Kenya, aims to empower young people, particularly girls from historically low-income communities, by showcasing essential life skills through a six-video film series. Each video features the narrative story of a courageous young woman, highlighting challenges like food insecurity, limited financial resources, and harassment, which are globally relevant. The goal is to inspire and equip young people to practice these life skills in their daily lives.
- Six-Video Film Series: Features stories of six young women, primarily from Asia, addressing universal challenges. The videos aim to teach life skills and inspire action among viewers.
- Pilot Implementation: Room to Read collaborates with partners to integrate the videos and accompanying materials (e.g., lesson plans, curriculum resources) into existing programs or as standalone resources in upper primary and secondary schools or non-formal education settings.
- Feedback and Refinement: Partners will pilot the videos, gather feedback from youth, educators, and program teams, and revise materials as needed to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
- Broader Adoption: Post-pilot, partners are encouraged to incorporate the videos and materials into their programs for wider use, subject to licensing agreements.
- Global Relevance: While five of the six videos focus on adolescent girls in Asia, the initiative seeks to adapt the content for other contexts, such as Africa, through guided facilitation and locally relevant materials.
- Contextualization: Adapt videos and materials to suit local cultural and educational contexts.
- Piloting: Show videos and test materials with adolescent participants, especially girls, in partner programs or schools.
- Feedback Collection: Gather insights from youth, educators, and partner teams to refine materials.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Provide Room to Read with monitoring data and, if applicable, evaluation data to assess impact.
The initiative positions Polycom, educators, and youth as part of a global movement to advance gender equality and empower women and girls by fostering life skills and resilience through storytelling and education.
