EmpowerFlow: Dignity and Health for Kibera’s Girls Menstrual Health campaign
Our initiative addresses the critical issue of menstrual hygiene management, promoting dignity, confidence, and education.
The Challenge
Menstruation shouldn’t keep girls out of school. Yet, many girls in Kibera miss class during their periods due to lack of access to sanitary products and hygiene facilities.
In Kibera, where every shilling is a hard-won treasure, access to sanitary towels is a quiet crisis for young girls. Yet, it is the absence of sanitary towels that cuts deepest, turning a natural part of life into a source of shame and desperation.
With no funds to purchase these essentials, the girls’ resort to unorthodox means—scraps of cloth, makeshift pads, anything to manage. But these solutions are fleeting and unreliable. Coerced by circumstance, some find themselves pushed into exploitative exchanges, trading their dignity for the sanitary towels they need to navigate their days with confidence.
This harsh reality in Kibera reveals a cycle of poverty that challenges their resilience, as they fight to preserve their health and self-respect against overwhelming odds.
