Pushing for Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) and Economic Justice

Program Overview

Polycom Girls actively contributes to Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) through various initiatives in Nairobi, Kitui and Homa Bay counties. These initiatives include Affirmative Action Funding, microfinancing, and Money Market Fund, where Polycom focuses on empowering women and young mothers from urban informal settlements. Since 2022, the project has impacted over 100 women-owned micro and small businesses. These women successfully access information on financial management, most especially within their chama groups resulting in one group accessing credit facilities from Kenya Women Finance Trust. This economic empowerment enables women to contribute effectively to their communities and reduces their risk of gender-based violence. Through conducting workshops on the National Women’s Economic Strategy, Polycom advocates for the adoption of the National Women’s Economic Strategy in all 47 counties. Additionally, a mentorship program connects experienced women entrepreneurs with startups, enhancing knowledge on business sustainability and growth. The noteworthy achievements of this pillar include training 200 women on economic empowerment, enabling two women’s groups to access affirmative funds, and successfully advocating for the inclusion of a market in Kibera within the Nairobi County integrated plan. At Polycom Girls, we recognize economic justice for girls and women as a fundamental aspect of promoting gender equality. Our commitment to this cause is reflected in multifaceted initiatives aimed at creating a tangible impact within the communities we serve. We actively engage young women in decision-making spaces vital to policy reforms. Through representation in key groups such as the Gender Sector Working Group, Disability Working Group, and the Women Economic Empowerment Technical Working Group, we ensure that the voices of young women including those living with disabilities and survivors of slavery, are heard. This contributes to policy changes that address their concerns. We advocate for equal pay for equal work, participating in critical policy spaces such as Gender Sector working group meetings. We champion equal access to quality education for girls during engagements with the Education Sector Working Group. We support young women in accessing affirmative funds, provide mentorship, and facilitate networking opportunities.
